My thoughts are with the families of those killed, and with the rest of the Bn who must carry on with the task in hand. After such a base act of treachery it will be very difficult to establish sound operational ties again, is it any wonder why in historic times the punishment for treachery was so severe! RIP to all those killed in this terrible incident.

My condolences to the Grenadiers and RMP so tragically killed. My thoughts are with all service personnel serving in Afghan.
Many units visit The Royal Armouries in Leeds before they go aboard (weapon familiarization) and many of these units sadly take casualties but these personnel and units are not forgotten and we will  remember them.

This statement is common sense listen to his talk which is attached to the link above

The chairman of the Commons intelligence and security committee Kim Howells has called for the phased withdrawal of British troops from Helmand province.

The former junior Foreign Office minister said the billions of pounds that would be saved should be redirected to defending the UK from terrorist attacks by al-Qaida.

Mr Howells told Today presenter Evan Davis why he believes it is time to end the war in Afghanistan.

It's not very often i get on my high horse or push forward out of the crowd to vent my spleen with passion.....But:

I will very shortly have both of my son's serving out in afghanistan with the regiment......needless to say a sudden end to the conflict & a total withdrawal of british troops would make myself & my family very happy teddy bears.

But the reality of such an action is much different folks......the taliban / Al-Queda  are pretty well equipt & in huge numbers along the afghan / pakistan borders these people will not stop at anything to enforce their rule of law & way of life. (Twin Towers) etc.

Pakistan only a few hundred miles away is & has "nuclear capabilities" throughout it's country, the recent attacks on pakistan military instalations / police station only go to show how close Al-Queda / Taliban are to making a nuclear aquisition in that region.

The withdrawal of troops from the afghan region would be handing pakistan a nightmare situation & very volatile world catastrophy.......

Why is it that the Koreans & IRAN are going full steam ahead in aquiring their own capabilities ?????.......they can see quite clearly what could unfold in pakistan......

Troops in afghan are indeed fighting for our very freedom & safety aswell as trying to reform such a backward country.

On behalf of the President and all the Boys at the Boro, we extend our deepest condolences to all the families and friends, a very sad day.

Some very wise words have been expressed in this thread and many wise opinions.
Looking at history, its 124 years since the first Tommy was lain to rest in in Afghan and subsequently joined by many others and our allies over the years. The huge Russian presence could make no headway.
We have changed nothing in all this time, the country exists as it always has and probably always will.
Once again history tells us that only the people can dictate their future, only when they decide the right action will there be a future.
When thousands of young men leave Afghan for a new life, when history once again tells us, as it did in England, young men have to stand and die in order to create peace. Its time for the young Afghans to stand and fight and die for their country, until that happens they will not have peace.
Until today I totally agreed with Lance, but now I don't believe we can ever be sure of who we are dealing with. This is a step back that I don't think can be retrieved.
May the good Lord keep all our Service people safe.
                                  Best Regards, Mac

Paying tribute to the five men, Secretary of State for Defence, Bob Ainsworth, said:

"I was so very sorry to hear of the deaths of these five brave soldiers, killed in the course of their duties in Afghanistan. That they were killed by one of those they were working alongside is a particular tragedy.

"The memory of WO1 Darren Chant, Sgt Matthew Telford, Cpl Nicholas Webster-Smith, Cpl Steven Boote and Guardsman James Major will live on. They were men of courage who died building security in Afghanistan and protecting people in the UK from terrorism.

Yes very sad news indeed, the mother of the RSM lives near me at Great Yarmouth and was interviewed on our local BBC look East.

She was very dignified, talking of her proud son, and was talking how he rescued comrades in a burning AV while the his Capt stood there doing nothing looking stunned, My heart goes out to all the fallen RIP never to be forgotten.

Darren Chant, was one of my Junior Guardsmen at the Guards Depot joining in Jul 86, my squad was made up entirely of Grenadiers, the other squad entirely Coldstreamers. He is the second person in that intake to die in tragic circumstances, the other being Gdsm Kenny who tragically died in the Troodos accident, with the 2nd Bn in Nov 89.

Least we Forget
